Fall is quickly approaching. There’s a certain crispness
in the air, especially in the evening. The leaves are beginning to turn from bright green to a less vibrant citron to a red/yellow mixture, and the garden stores are stocking mums by the barrel. There’s no doubt about it, autumn is arriving.
With fall’s fluctuating temperatures comes a desire for something a little different for dessert. It’s not cool enough for heavy cakes and hot drinks, but it’s no longer warm enough to warrant ice cream and cobblers. So why not try something new with a bit of a changing seasons twist.
One of the fruits that tastes of fall is the fig. Figs become more readily available as the temperature falls, so take advantage of the in-season prices.
A great option to add a bit of pizzazz to the dish is to drizzle a plate of figs with chocolate ganache. Ganache is a simple blend of equal parts cream and chocolate. Semi-sweet chocolate is your best option with figs, particularly couverture if you can find it. You can use heavy or whipping cream to your taste; it’s the perfect complement to the slightly bitter taste of the figs.
Another great, simple dessert is biscuits – crisp, cookie-like treats often flavored with chocolates or rich spices. They serve as an intermediary between the heavy cakes and cookies of the upcoming holiday season and the light, fruity desserts of summer past. One such biscuit is
Walker’s Chocolate Shortbread
Rings. The light cookie gives the dessert some weight, while the rich chocolate soothes the palate. Another option would be
Speculaas Spiced Windmill
Cookies. And since you can purchase biscuits already prepared, it cuts your stress exponentially; all you have to worry about is finding a pretty platter on which to arrange the treats.
If you’re in a warmer climate and don’t quite get the fuss about fall as of yet, a great way to get into the fall spirit would be a chocolate that’s reminiscent of festive fall colors yet still maintains a light taste that’s appropriate for your warmer temperatures. There are many great flavored fudges out there that would suit the bill admirably. One such confection is
Churchill’s Victorian Rose Chocolate Orange
Fudge. The packaging is colored with hues that will remind you of fall, but the delicate orange flavoring won’t be too heavy on a warm fall afternoon.
For those in cooler climates where the leaves are already advancing towards full color, something a bit stronger may be in order. A great option in this case would be a filled candy with a twinge of a stronger flavor. Perhaps a heavier, more bitter truffle – one with maybe a dark chocolate or coffee flavoring would be perfect like the
Guyaux Truffles with their bittersweet cocoa.
These strongly flavored treats are a great match for your favorite flavor of
Truffle Gourmet Hot Chocolate
or Numi Flowering
Tea on a chilly autumn evening.
As the temperature continues to drop, enjoy the tastes of fall. After all, the holiday season will be here before we know it, and the time to savor these tasty treats will have passed.
