dad with daughter fathers dayGrowing up, Amy and her father didn’t always have the best relationship. Amy was, of course, Daddy’s little girl. Treasured and adored…as long as she toed the line. But heaven forbid Amy show off her independent streak at all. That never pleased her father, which made for rough teenage years.

After high school, Amy went halfway across the country for college. She just needed to get away and be herself without her father constantly looking over her shoulder. For the first few weeks, it was great, she loved the independence. But by the holidays, Amy was starting to desperately miss her family. Unfortunately, she couldn’t go back home for the holidays, as her part-time job in retail management needed her to remain in her college town. So Amy just buckled down and prepared for the second semester.

And so the school year passed. Amy felt even more distanced from her family than before, but discovered that she was truly ok with that. She decided to stay in her college town through the summer to keep moving up the ladder at work. Her family wasn’t happy, but a large bouquet of flowers at Mother’s Day definitely helped to get her Mom back on her side.

By the time Father’s Day came around, Amy and her dad rarely spoke at all. A quick 5-minute phone conversation here and there when her dad answered the phone instead of her mom was about it. But Amy still wanted to honor her dad on her first Father’s Day away from home.

As Amy wandered around the mall after work one day, nothing quite seemed to be the right choice for her dad. She didn’t want something as cliché as a tie or tee shirt. Another flower order didn’t seemed to fit her dad at all. And he was never into sports too much, so a pair of tickets to a game wouldn’t work either.

venchi chocolate cigar italianAmy decided to stop off at her favorite chocolate shop in order to grab a few things to make herself feel better. As she greeted the shop’s owner and ordered her usual, a new display caught her eye. It looked like a display of cigars, but Amy couldn’t figure out what cigars would be doing in the chocolate shop. The shop’s owner explained that they weren’t tobacco cigars as they appeared, but rather they were Venchi chocolate cigars. All the appearance of a cigar without the nasty smoke or tobacco side effects.

Immediately, Amy knew that these were the perfect Father’s Day gift for her dad. She and her dad had always shared a sweet tooth, and her dad would regularly pick her up a little treat on his way home from work. It was one of the few things that they still were able to bond over.

Amy had the shop owner ship a variety box of the cigars to her dad and enclosed a card that she had already picked up from the card store in the mall. A few days later, her dad called to let her know that he had received the box, and was already on his second chocolate cigar.

From that day forward, Amy never had to worry about finding the perfect Father’s Day gift for her dad. Instead, she just had to stop by the chocolate shop, order the latest variety of Venchi chocolate cigars, and wait to hear a review on this year’s flavors from her dad.
