When you think of novelty chocolates, you likely think of the dime store candy cigars and cigarettes of your childhood. You know the ones, they melted in your mouth the second they hit your tongue. Now that you’re all grown up, you need a chocolate treat that echoes your refined palette. The Italian confectionary company
Venchi has spent the last 125-plus years producing chocolates that do just that.
In 1878, the young Silvano Venchi opened his first chocolate shop in Turin. His emphasis on handcrafted chocolates with a rich, unique flavor helped Venchi grow from those modest roots. Silvano developed his own exclusive recipes, concentrating on all-natural ingredients without any of the chemical processes that were increasingly used in chocolate making.
Immediately, Venchi became popular throughout Italy for its Nougatine. These small candies made of crushed and caramelized hazelnuts coated in dark chocolate were instant hits. The regional flavors captured the taste buds of Italians and word spread to nearby portions of Europe.
Along the way, Venchi started to form their chocolates into the shape of the
cigars that were becoming more popular by the day. This gave customers the best of both worlds. They could appear to be following the fashion of carrying cigars with them everywhere while still enjoying the chocolate flavors that they loved.
The ingredients are truly the key to the unique flavor of Venchi chocolates. The cocoa comes from only the finest growers in Africa, Central, and South America. The rum and vanilla are pure and natural. And the Piedmontese hazelnuts, limited to only local growth and use, are said to keep the chocolate naturally fresh. Venchi does all of this without using any animal fats or hydrogenated oils, both known health concerns the world over.
Even though more than a century has passed since its founding, Venchi still adheres to the manufacturing practices that made them a success originally. With more than 250 varieties of chocolate in production, the vast majority are still manufactured by hand. This attention to detail and artisan craftsmanship helps make Venchi one of the foremost names in fine Italian chocolates.
Venchi now distributes their chocolates not only in Italy but throughout the world. Venchi has found fans in almost every country that adores chocolate, and chocolatiers are honored to count Venchi amongst the brands they carry. In addition, Venchi still owns several company stores, including those in Rome, Venice, Turn, and Milan.
If you haven’t tried a Venchi chocolate cigar recently, you really don’t know what you’re missing. Whether you prefer nougatine, pralines, or truffles, there’s a Venchi chocolate cigar that’s perfect for you or for whomever you’re choosing a gift.
